ORDERING OSD PRODUCT

Ordering OSD parts is the same as ordering our custom enclosures as detailed on our Customer Service Documents page. You begin by having your part quoted. Once that is done, the next step is to order the part and make payment arrangements.

Submitting a Purchase Order
All purchases must be in writing and submitted to PEI on a purchase order or written on company letterhead. Your P.O. should list the following information:

  • Our company name and correct address as the 'seller'
  • Your company's name, address, telephone number, fax number and/or e-mail address, and the name of the authorized person placing the PO
  • Quotation number and/or product number (for reordering of existing parts)
  • Quantity required
  • Price per part
  • Due date
  • Shipping method (our standard is UPS ground)

Credit and Payment
If you have not established credit or are not planning to do so, you can use a credit card or wire transfer. We accept VISA, MasterCard, and American Express.

Due to the customization of the product involved, we do not accept COD purchases. As such, if you plan on purchasing without establishing credit or without using a credit card, then you must submit payment along with the purchase order. Please note that P.O.s received without established credit, credit card information, or advance payment will not be scheduled or entered into our system until such arrangements are made. Also, regardless of payment method, a PO must be submitted, as noted above.

For more information about our Credit Policy or related topics, please visit our Documents page.

PO Acknowledgment
All purchase orders are acknowledged in writing via fax or e-mail within 1 business day. If you do not receive such an acknowledgment, please contact our customer service department.

For more information on purchasing product or related topics, you can visit our Customer Services web page or contact our Customer Service department by e-mail or telephone, (800) 580-6268, ext. 10.

OSD PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PEI's "Off the Shelf Design" (OSD) program is the result of utilizing the latest CAD technology and design automation coupled with the years of experience gained from designing thousands of enclosures. By customizing our Pro/E CAD program specifically for our manufacturing process, we are able to modify specially designed 3D models with a minimum amount of design engineering activity.

How OSD Works
Briefly, the program uses three types of data that have been custom programmed for our process:

  • Flexible Geometric Designs
  • Customized User Defined Features
  • Proprietary Family Tables

With these three sources of data, we are able to develop an entire enclosure project with virtually no design engineering activity. What this means is that by simply inputting dimensional data along with dropping and dragging features & components into the model we are able to send jobs to the production floor in a fraction of what a custom enclosure takes...sometimes within a matter of minutes!

Furthermore, our OSD program is structured to handle specific types of standard and custom components and features such that time and cost involved are greatly reduced.

Quotation Stage
The first step in utilizing the OSD program is to submit an OSD Request for Quote (RFQ) form. Typically, the form can be completed in 2 to 5 minutes.

You will be asked to supply the following information:

  • The enclosure Style and Access Configuration based the PEI samples
  • Overall dimensions of the enclosure (length, width, height)
  • Cutouts for corresponding components and features
  • PCB mounts, standoffs, fasteners, etc.
  • Plastic Material requirements, if known...type, color, thickness, and texture
  • Production quantities and required lead-times

Ordering Stage
To order OSD enclosures, the following steps need to take place:

  • Submit a PO
  • Establish credit with PEI, submit credit card information, or submit payment (see Credit Policy for establishing credit with PEI)
  • Submit drawings, sketches, etc. that show design details not included with RFQ, such as specific components, final dimensions, etc.

Design Stage
This stage will typically take 1 day to complete, provided all the needed information is supplied at the time of PO submission. If additional information is required, then it may take slightly longer.

As with our Custom Enclosures, a drawing will be presented to the customer by PEI for approval. Any delays in obtaining approval will affect the final delivery dates for prototypes and production parts.

Prototypal Build Stage
This stage will typically take 1 to 3 days to complete once the design has been approved. Prototype parts can be shipped for "next day" delivery or as specified by the customer.

Production Build Stage
This stage will typically take 3 to 5 day to complete once the prototype part has been approved. If silk screening, painting, shielding, or special order materials are involved, then lead-times will be adjusted, accordingly.

OSD COMPONENTS & FEATURES

Below are lists of those components and hardware that we use for OSD enclosures. As with our plastic sheet materials, we strive to stock an adequate supply of these items to meet normal business activities. However, we can not guarantee that such stocks will always be available.

Standoffs/Spacers/PCB Mounts
For our OSD program, we only offer standoffs in the 4-40 screw size. If you require a size different than what we show below, then the part would have to be customized by our engineering staff.

Connectors & Features
Most of the standard connectors found on electronic/electrical devices are available on our OSD enclosures. Many of those are standard items that only need to be named and located on the surface because we have their dimensions and shape stored in our family tables library.

For nonstandard items requiring cutouts or recessed pockets, you will need to tell us length and width of the feature, itself. For recess pockets we also need to know the pocket depth.

OSD MATERIALS

Under the PEI Off the Shelf Design program, there are specific materials that can be used for enclosures. Enclosures made with materials that do not comply with the OSD program are considered to be custom and will be handled per our Special Order Material policy.

The materials listed below are our standard stocked materials. At any given time, other materials may be available or due to recent orders by other customers, some of our stocked materials may be in limited supply. We strive to maintain an adequate stock of materials at all times, however, we can not guarantee that such stock will always be available.

OSD DIMENSIONS

In order for our engineers to design your enclosure, we must have the overall size of the unit, as well as the size and layout of all components, hardware, cutouts, etc. If you have CAD or hardcopy drawings of your enclosure, then we will use them to develop the OSD design. If you do not have such drawings a hand sketch with basic dimensions may be enough for our engineers to begin the design process. As they work on the project, they will contact you for additional specifications and dimensions.

Basic Enclosure Dimensions
At PEI, we layout all drawings using a Cartesian coordinate system. Basically, this system requires that all layout items are referenced to an X,Y datum point.

The first step is to establish the overall dimensions of the enclosure. To assist you with this task, we have developed Un-dimensioned Sample Drawings for each style that show which panels and features need to be dimensioned.

If you do not have some of the required dimensions or if such dimensions are not critical and you would prefer that PEI develop them, you should state that on the drawing as "TBD" when you submit it to us.

Component & Feature Dimensioning
Under our OSD program, we have selected the most common components and features for availability. Where possible, we are able to offer specific items with standard dimensions so that you only have to tell us the location of the item. If you require cutouts for items that are not on our standard list, then you will need to tell us the dimensions of the opening as well as the location on the panel.

To show a component or feature location, we would prefer you follow these guidelines:

  • The datum point is the 0,0 coordinate for X,Y dimensions and is located at the farthest left, bottom point of intersection of the part
  • Circles or primarily round objects such as "D Openings" are measured from their center point to the datum point
  • Straight sided or non-circular objects are measured from their left, bottom corner to the datum point

If you need assistance with laying out your part, we will be happy to to do so, however, if your needs require design work, then there may be some engineering charges incurred and delivery dates may need to be extended.

OSD STYLES

Currently, under our OSD program there are 4 basic styles of enclosures and 3 access configurations for each. The style refers to the basic shape of the enclosure while the access configuration deals with which panel(s) you want to remove for assembly and service of the interior electronics.
